Why Prep Determines Success

Coatings stick by mechanical bond, not chemistry alone. If the surface is smooth, contaminated, or sealed, the coating will eventually peel — especially under hot tires and temperature swings common in Colorado.

Acid Etching

Acid etching uses a mild acid solution to open the pores of the concrete. It is inexpensive and common in DIY kits. Limitations:

  • Does not remove existing sealers or coatings effectively
  • Creates a relatively weak profile
  • Leaves residues that can interfere with adhesion if not neutralized perfectly
  • Does not address uneven or damaged surfaces

Many failed DIY floors started with acid etching only.

Diamond Grinding

Professional diamond grinding uses industrial machines with diamond tooling to remove the top layer of concrete and create a controlled surface profile (typically CSP 2–3 for epoxy systems). Benefits:

  • Removes old coatings, sealers, and contaminants
  • Creates a consistent mechanical profile for strong adhesion
  • Levels minor imperfections
  • Works on hard, dense, or previously coated slabs

This is the standard method used with commercial-grade systems.

If a contractor only mentions “etching” or “cleaning,” ask about mechanical grinding. Proper diamond grinding is one of the clearest differences between a long-lasting professional floor and a coating that fails early.
