How to Prepare a Garage Floor for Epoxy
Prep is roughly 80% of a coating's success. Here's the professional process, step by step.
The short answer: preparing a garage for epoxy means clearing and cleaning the space, degreasing, repairing cracks and spalls, mechanically profiling the concrete (diamond grinding or shot blasting — not acid etching), and testing for moisture before any coating goes down. Get the prep right and the coating bonds for years; skip it and even premium products peel.
Step-by-step garage floor prep
- Empty and clean the garage. Remove everything, sweep, and vacuum out dust and debris so nothing gets trapped under the coating.
- Degrease and remove stains. Oil, transmission fluid, and tire marks must come out — contamination is a leading cause of adhesion failure. Deep stains may need to be ground out.
- Repair cracks, spalls, and pitting. Cracks and surface damage are chased out and filled with a structural repair product so they don't telegraph through the finished floor. (See concrete repair.)
- Mechanically profile the slab. This is the step DIY kits skip. Diamond grinding or shot blasting opens the concrete's pores so the coating can grip. It creates a consistent profile a chemical wash simply can't.
- Test for moisture. Concrete that wicks moisture will push a coating off from below. We evaluate moisture and mitigate it where needed before coating — critical in Colorado basements and slabs-on-grade.
- Prime and coat. Only once the slab is clean, sound, profiled, and dry do the base coat, flake broadcast (if chosen), and topcoat go down.
